Be Strong & Courageous: Faith in Recovery | Joshua 1:9
Recovery is a journey filled with highs and lows, victories and struggles. Whether you're overcoming addiction, healing from past wounds, or trying to rebuild your life, the road can feel overwhelming. But in Joshua 1:9, God gives us both a command and a promise:
"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."
Let’s break this verse down and explore how it applies to recovery.
1. "Have I not commanded you?" – God’s Call to Strength
This isn’t just a suggestion—it’s a command. God doesn’t ask if we feel strong enough or if we think we can handle it. He commands us to be strong because He knows we can be, not in our own power, but through Him.
In recovery, strength is essential. The fight against addiction, self-doubt, and past mistakes is real. But when God commands us to be strong, He is also empowering us to do it. He doesn’t call us to something without equipping us for it.
🔹 Recovery Application: When you feel weak, remember that God has already given you strength. It’s not about feeling strong but about trusting that He is giving you the power to endure.
2. "Be strong and courageous." – Facing Recovery with Boldness
Courage is not the absence of fear—it’s moving forward despite fear. Recovery requires courage every single day.
- It takes courage to admit you need help.
- It takes courage to walk away from toxic relationships.
- It takes courage to face the pain instead of numbing it.
- It takes courage to believe you are worthy of healing.
God calls us to be courageous because He knows that fear will try to hold us back. Fear tells us we’ll fail again. Fear says we’re too broken to change. But God tells us to move forward anyway.
🔹 Recovery Application: When fear creeps in, remind yourself that courage isn’t about feeling brave—it’s about trusting God and taking the next step, even when you’re afraid.
3. "Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged." – Overcoming Fear & Setbacks
Fear and discouragement are two of the biggest challenges in recovery. There will be moments of struggle, days when you feel like giving up, and times when the enemy whispers that you’ll never change.
But God tells us not to be afraid and not to be discouraged. Why? Because fear and discouragement are lies.
- Fear says, "You’ll never be free."
- Discouragement says, "You’ve failed too many times."
- God says, "I am with you—keep going."
Just because you face setbacks does not mean you’ve lost. Recovery is not about perfection; it’s about progress. God’s grace is greater than your mistakes, and every step forward is a step toward healing.
🔹 Recovery Application: When you feel discouraged, turn to God’s truth instead of your emotions. Remember that a bad day does not mean a bad life, and a setback is just a setup for a comeback.
4. "For the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." – You Are Never Alone
This is the most powerful promise of all. God doesn’t just send us into battle and hope we make it—He goes with us.
- When you feel lonely, He is there.
- When you’re tempted, He gives strength.
- When you fall, He lifts you up.
- When you feel unworthy, He reminds you that you are loved.
Recovery can feel isolating, but you are never truly alone. God walks with you in every struggle, every victory, and every moment in between. He is not just watching from a distance—He is right there beside you, fighting for you.
🔹 Recovery Application: When you feel like no one understands, remember that God is always with you. Lean on Him, pray for strength, and trust that He will never leave your side.
Just for Today…
Recovery is a daily choice. You don’t have to have it all figured out—you just have to take it one day at a time.
Just for today, I will choose courage over fear.
Just for today, I will choose faith over doubt.
Just for today, I will trust that God is with me, no matter what.
